Overview
The Vietnam War occurred during this time period of 1970 to 2000, and America saw presidents such as Nixon, Reagan, and Johnson. As a result of the war and lifestyle during this period, there was a movement of counterculture, which was popular among younger generations. This included unique music, dress, behavior, and drug use. At often times, these countercultures would engage in revolts or acts against society because of set norms they didn’t agree with. Some of these revolts were violent and resulted in many casualties and deaths. There are several instances of mass deaths during this time period as a result of the established countercultures, which developed into cults. Cults across America became prevalent within this time period and deserve to be included in history textbooks.

Narrative
Cults in American history have been prominent since the mid-20th century. The word cult is defined as a system of religious veneration and devotion directed toward a particular figure or object. Many major examples of cults in history would include Heaven's Gate, People’s Temple and Ant Hill Kids. These became well known throughout the world due to its extremity and cruelness. For example, in People’s Temple, the leader poisoned his people and in the Ant Hill Kids, the father cut off some of his kids' limbs. This is very unfortunate and many measures have been taken to prevent these things. Because of the extremity of these events, they serve a significant part in the history of America. It is important to know atrocities that have been committed and how the community and government reacted to them.
Cults can range from very large, such as the Ant Hill Kids, to very small, some consisting of only a few people. The counterculture mentality during this time period set up the possibility for a wide range of cults. Most of the larger ones are often disregarded and forgotten in history, but they play a big part in how today’s culture was formed. The main purpose of cults was to bring attention to problems in the current culture that needed fixing, whether it was that cult’s intention or not. This ultimately resulted in a whole new community starting in the 21st century that was able to learn from the disastrous cult issues experienced in the previous years. An example of this is increased security and surveillance of the community in order to ensure safety concerns.
